Obituary of Robert H. Moore
This come from the May 30, 1912 issue of the Lineville Tribune Robert H. Moore, one of the first settlers of this vicinity died at his home five miles southwest of this place on Saturday morning, of apoplexy, in the 89th year of his age. His illness was of short duration and mercifully painless. He was stricken by apoplexy last Tuesday while at the home of his son, J. B. Moore, near his own home. The attack produced entire paralysis of his right side and affected his tongue, and throat, rendering him speechless. He was taken to his home where he was attended by a physician all that was possible being done for his relief and comfort, but the attack was necessarily fatal, and after lingering until Saturday he sank peacefully into that slumber that knows no wakening. He had lived where he died for more than seventy years, having located here when only a youth of seventeen years. He was endowed by nature with the stuff of which pioneers are made, daring, fearless and dominant. There were Indians, who were numerous in those days and with them
he associated, respected him for his prowess and courage, and were his friends and helpers. He acquired by
entry and purchase a large tract of beautiful and fertile land adjacent to Weldon river, on which are now homes of six of his sons. For several years prior to his death he suffered from partial blindness, but otherwise was afflicted with few infirmities. Only a few days ago he rode to town on horse back and his physical strength seemed undiminished. During his later years he lived mainly in the past and in his affection for his children and grand children, and he had no fears or dread of death, except that it severed him from association with those he loved. His was a remarkable life and a remarkable character and his end like the patriarchs of old, surrounded by his many children, grand children and great grandchildren, who will ever cherish and revere his memory.

His descendants number twelve children living of sixteen born; 69 grand children, 80 great grand children and 6 great great grand children.

Robert Moore was born May 10th, 1824 in Howard county, Mo. He lived with his parents in different parts of Missouri during the pioneer days of the state until eighteen years of age, and June 18, 1842 was married to Malinda, daughter of Wm. Wasson. To this union six children were born, four of whom survive him; viz: Samira Ann Browning of Mercer, Mo; Amanda P. Ellis, of Keighley, Kan.; Milton Moore of Lineville, Ia.; and Sarah Ellen Wells of Mercer, Mo. The other two, Jackson, and Eliza Jane, preceding him to the heavenly home. Soon after his marriage Mr. Moore settled on his present home in Mercer county, Mo., and lived there for many years among the Indians. March 9, 1852 Mr. Moore was left a widower with six small children to care for. Jan. 12, 1854, he married Hester Ann, daughter of David
Jewett. To his second marriage ten children were born, seven still surviving: James B., Thomas B., Cordilia Gaul, Robert S., Otto, Douglas and Charlotte Browning of St. Joseph, Mo.; Wm. M. and Sonora E. having preceded him to the Great Beyond.

During the Rebellion Mr. Moore fought in the union cause in Company H as second Lieutenant. After the war was over he returned to his home where he lived with and for his children and friends. He was widely known, honored and loved for his many manly and Christian virtues. He professed the Christian faith, living a number of years as a member of the Christain church; then after a careful investigation of the doctrines of the Church of Jesus of Latter Day Saints, he united with that church and remained faithful until death.

Brother Moore was one of those broad-minded, hospitable men who made friends among the best citizens, being loved and respected by them. He is not dead but sleepeth. His spirit has gone to mingle with the loved ones who have gone before, awaiting the resurrection of the just. He died May 25, 1912, after a few days of sickness. He was laid to rest in the Moore cemetery. Funeral at 2:30 P.M. May 26, 1912, by M. M. Turpen."

  2. Billyjack has left a new comment on your post "Descendants of Robert Haines Moore":

Robert Segal Moore was father of Porter Monroe Moore who was my grandfather. My grandmother Jessie M. Moore was a MacIntosh. If my mother was correct she said Porter (her father) told her 2 of the Moore boys (sons of Levi) married 2 of Kit Carson's nieces. That would have been Robert Haines and William Howard, married Malinda Wasson and Eliza A. Wasson. I never had the ambition to check further into that. There was another Moore named Truman I have a newspaper article about from the 80's Will post it when have time. My mother was Lindabelle Moore, daughter of Porter Moore and Jessie MacIntosh
