NOTES for William Argo
The following notes came from the internet Jean Leeper for William Argo     Jean Leeper email

in Hamilton Twp., Decatur County, on William Argo's death certificate it states that he was born in Mansfield, OH. William is probably the 5-10 year old in the Federal 1830 Census of the William Burge family, as he was 5 ½ years old in Nov. 1830, the date of the Census. Did he have a step brother, half brother or a brother; as another boy is 0-5 years old? In the 1840 Federal Census Richland Co. OH Burge, William L. there is a male 15-20 and one male 30-40 and one female 30-40. We know he married on July 19, 1843 in Richland Co. Anna Mary McIlvain and married by George Leiter. L. Wesley Argo in The Argo Families Revisited, believed William. probably 'descended from one of the five Argo brothers who migrated from Delaware westward through Greene County, Pennsylvania, probably the son of one of the unknown brothers of Smith Argo (23-AY)' (I believe probably a brother of Smith by a later marriage.) Possibly lived in the upper portion of West Virginia near Greene Co., PA or between PA and OH. In Mansfield, Richland County, no records of any Argos are found during 1820-1830. A Smith Argo is found in Chippewa Township, Wayne County, Ohio 1820 Ohio Census. "Smith Argo, males one 0-10, two 10-16, one 26-24, females, three 0-10, one 26-45.

Argo in his book states Smith Argo was in Wayne County (near Richland County) in 1819 but returned to Greene County, PA where he was in the 1810 and 1830 census. No record of land in Wayne Co., Ohio was found for Smith Argo. I do strongly follow the idea that John Alden Argo was Smith Argo's father or brother. The only way this can be proved or disproved would be to obtain an old family Bible from the Argo family In 1830 Land Records of Richland (later Ashland) County, Ohio. "2nd day of March A.D. 1830 we find William Burge and Naomi Burge his wife purchased in Vermillion Twp. 'North part of the East half of the Northwest quarter of Section #11 Township No 21, Range 16 of this Virginia Military District School lands granted by Congress for the use of Schools and subject to the regulations and restrictions of the Legislature containing 22 acres 3 roods and 31 1/2 perches be the same more or less'.      After William and Anna Mary Argo are married we find land records in Richland Co., Ohio. One dated 13th day of March 1848 "they purchased Lot #2 in Frees Addition, Mansfield from John Free and wife." One dated July 8, 1848 "William Argo and Anna Mary his wife to Ann Winfield and Elizabeth Watson the East half of lot #2 in Frees Addition, Mansfield. Anna Mary signed with her mark. They sold on 4th day of May Anno Domini 1854 The west half of Lot #2 in Frees Addition in Mansfield, Ohio. They are in the 1850 Richland County, Ohio, Mansfield Census. District 127, Madison Twp. Dated August 26, 1850.

Second Generation 2. Mary Naomi Argo (1.William1) born 1845, Oh., married MAR-30-1862, Henry Louis Vinzant, born DEC-18-1838, Putnam Co., In., (son of James Jefferson Vinzant and Deborah Wright) died JAN-24-1920, buried: Yingling, Lineville, Ia. Mary died OCT-11-1908, buried: Yingling Cemetery.

This obituary was furnished to me by Margie Ellis Shields, a daughter of Birt Ellis and a Grand daughter of Henry Vinzant.

Henry Vinzant who passed away at his home 4 miles southwest of Lineville.    Announcement of whose death was made in the Tribune last week, was born in Indiana, Dec. 18, 1838, and died Jan. 24, 1920, aged 81 years 1 month and 6 days. The deceased came to Wayne County 1852, settling on a farm 3 miles North of Lineville and moving from there the next year 1853, located on the farm where he died,    Southwest of here in Mercer Co., Missouri. He was united in marriage to Mary Naomi Argo in 1862, she preceded him to the life beyond,    Oct. 11, 1908.    To this union 14 children were born, six of whom still survive, as follows. Frank, Clarence, and Grover Vinzant and Mrs. Bert Ellis of this place and vicinity and Mrs. James Smith, of Rock Island, Ill.    Besides the children he leaves to morn his loss 30 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 2 brothers, 1 sister and a host of other relatives and friends.    Two of his grandchildren, Lloyd and Bryan Vinzant have always made their home with their grandfather. Funeral services were conducted at the home, Jan. 26th, by Rev. Guy Yingling, after which remains were tenderly laid to rest in the Yingling Cemetery. The 69 years he resided in the community was wrought the most wonderful development the Country, United States, and the world in general, over experienced in any equal period of the history of the World.    From the Virgin forest lands have been reclaimed, cleaned and put in cultivation, log cabins supplanted by fine modern homes, the mower, binder, cultivators, plows, threshing machines and tractors, all have come into common use on the farm, since the deceased has lived here.    In addition of those are the railroads, telephones, rural mail delivery, and thousands of the other useful inventions and convenient for the comfort and pleasure of humanity. It was his privilege to live in one place in this community for almost three-quarters of a century, to begin young with the experiment of settlement, grow with the Country through the different stages of development and at last look out on the World at hte setting of the sun and see a wonderful country.    With its purposes and possibilities and feel that his and other old timer's labor and work have not been wasted and that his life has had a part in its upbringing and shall retain a lien upon the future.

ANNA MARY CATHERINE JUDITH MCILVAIN was born March 26th, l828, in Hanover, Pa., and died suddenly from apoplexy, the morning of June 30, l903, at the home of her grandson, EARNEST, in Pleasanton, Iowa, where she had gone to visit a few days, being 75 years, 3 months and 4 days of age.
She was married to WM. ARGO, July l9th, l843, in Ohio. To this union six children were born, one girl and three sons living and two dying in their infancy.
In l854 they moved west, settling in Mercer County and near Mercer where they lived until l885. They removed to Iowa, living in Lineville awhile then buying and coming to the property near the Argo School House, two and one-half miles east of Pleasanton, living there until the death of MR. ARGO, March 30, l898. After her husband's death, MRS. ARGO thought she would live her few remaining days with her children and grandchildren, but later deciding that she was yet able to care for herself for some time yet, bought a house and lot here which she lived in until death.
Early in life she was converted and made a happy profession of the religion of Christianity, uniting with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, later with the Lutherans which she and her husband remained members until their death.
Thus ends the career of one of those "Mothers of Israel" and a soldier's widow who was always doing good, and devoted to her family, never let any want for anything if she could supply their wants even to the depriving of herself.
The funeral services were held in the M.E. Church the following day, conducted by Rev. H.A. Cowles, after which the remains were taken to the Gammill Cemetery near Boothtown and there laid to rest in the family vault by the side of her husband.
